A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
