The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.
"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
