Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
